The second and longest chapter of the Quran, Al-Baqarah (The Cow), is named after a famous story in verses 67–73 where Prophet Moses commands the Israelites to sacrifice a specific cow to solve a mysterious murder and witness God’s power to raise the dead.
The Murder Mystery
● A wealthy Israelite was killed by his nephew out of greed for inheritance.
● The killer hid the crime and blamed other tribes.
● The people went to Prophet Moses (Musa) to find the truth.
The Command and Hesitation
● God told Moses to command the people to slaughter a cow.
● Instead of obeying right away, the Israelites mocked Moses and thought he was joking.
● They asked unnecessary questions to make the task harder.
● God made the requirements very specific through their stubbornness: a bright yellow cow, middle-aged, unblemished, and never used for labor or plowing.
The Resolution
● Only one orphan youth owned a cow matching this exact description.
● The Israelites bought the cow for a massive price and finally sacrificed it.
● Moses struck the dead man’s body with a piece of the cow.
● God brought the man back to life momentarily to name his killer before he died again, proving God’s power over death.
